Two arms instead of a cradle
Davits pick a light boat straight up off the water on a pair of arms. Simpler, cheaper and far less structure than a four-post lift.
Where they stop being the answer
Above a certain weight, or in open water with real chop, a cradle lift holds the hull properly and davits do not.
